Saturday we play, Sunday we learn. Good food, good times, and a bunch of people excited to share skills and knowledge.
Saturday, September 30th at 2pm we kick off with a workshop on building flammable sculptures out of natural materials. We will create one or more small effigies to burn without using nails or wire, leaving minimal impact to the land.
Around 3-4pm, we will begin lighting our cooking fires. We ask that folks bring a dish to be cooked on a fire and shared with the group in hopes of creating a micro food festival based around campfire cooking. It may be helpful to team up with friends and bring your offering together. Some plates, bowls and silverware are provided, but you will need to bring your own cookware and ingredients. Food is not being provided by the event.
After dinner we will ignite the sculptures that were made in the workshop and throw a party. You are strongly encouraged to bring musical instruments, spin fire, tell a joke, share a story or poem, improvise a dance routine or show off whatever else you’d like. Bring camping chairs or picnic blankets if you can.
Sunday, October 1st starting at 10am we have a day of skillshare workshops. So far we have presenters willing to share knowledge about printmaking, hand harvested clay pottery, plant identification and more.
Workshop schedule will be determined during the event. Folks are welcome to arrive whatever time suits them, but we will try to wrap things up by 6pm.
Guests are encouraged to camp out over the weekend. Feel free to arrive on Friday to set up camp. We won’t have any Friday content planned, but I guarantee there will be a nice campfire and some smiling faces to share a conversation with.
Happy Hill, the location for this gathering is a beautiful off-grid homestead bordering a long stretch of the South Anna River in eastern Louisa, Virginia. Being an off-grid location means there may not be some of the amenities you are used to, so plan accordingly. There is minimal electricity, plenty of wildlife, and outhouses instead of toilets. I swear they are way better than port-a-potties. We recommend bringing your own water, as we have limited drinking water available.
This is an all ages gathering, so children are welcomed. It would be great if a few folks came with a workshop offering for the littles. In the case of heavy rain the event will be postponed.
Reach out if you’d like to come early to help set up.
Hope to see you soon,
